Hi, My name is Tony Southey. I took up woodturning as a hobby in 2004 after seeing a demonstration by Kent Branch AWGB at a local saw mill. I turn as a hobby in my retirement and most of my work gets given to friends and family. A small amount is exhibited twice a year at the Friars in Aylesford at the AWGB branch Exhibitions where some of my items are for sale. I prefer to turn mostly English hardwood such as Beech, Elm, Yew, Sycamore, Oak, Cherry and Apple.
Living in the heart of Kent in the village of Detling there is never a shortage of obtainable timber from local farmers and land owners. We also have a number of tree surgeons in the vicinity that can supply the needs of wood turners. I don’t turn treen or utility items preferring to make things that are tactile and pleasing to the eye.
I became a member of the AWGB Kent Branch in September 2003, and learnt so much from the members there. It is my belief that you cannot take without giving back, I therefore became a member of the committee and now organize the program for the twice monthly meetings. In 2010 the Kent Branch changed it's title to The Kent Woodturners
